Bots bots bots!
8:14:50 PM EST - Eberon
Hey! Great news for those of you who want some fodder to play with offline. Team UC has released a new mod that includes a couple of bots. Straight from the site itself:

"I created a small Bot Pack that simply sets up several of the Pawns so they can return fire in MP. To Install it, just copy this file to ..DeusEx/System folder. Then add an EditPackages line for MPBots in DeusEx.ini (If you are unsure how to do that, post a question on any DX related Forum.)This Package only requires the MP Patch for DX."

In addition to this, Team UC has also opened up a new forum dubbed the "Modders Mansion". It's for non-coding mod questions only.

Redsun 2020 redesign.
12:07:10 AM EST - Eberon
Redsun 2020 is redesigning their site and will be launching the brand new one on April 6th. It's being designed around 4.0+ browsers, and Scopa is asking anyone who has a problem with this to email him and say so. Get after it!

Invasion of the news snatchers
10:51:16 PM EST - Eberon
With BackDoorBandit taking a small hiatus from the site, and me myself extremely busy, I've had to resort to the unthinkable: news whoring! Straight from Planet Deus Ex:

  • Deicide has some new screenies from the Introduction available for your viewing pleasure.
  • The X Strain has a brief progress update, and also an updated link to Airon's homepage.
  • Deus Ex Ed has a new tutorial by Vipersheart, entitled, "Optimize your map.
  • Deus Fortress has a large helping of new screenshots, and also 4 new wallpapers in 1024x768 res. If you need a different size wallpaper, e-mail EternalSpark.
  • Illuminati 2072 has a minor update announcing that the first level of the mod has reached beta stage.
  • Universal Constructor has updated their Barks tutorial, thanks to Steve Tack, and also have a second Barks tutorial, Using the Barks Created By Ion Storm.

  • I promise that things will be picking up soon. Let's hope that some of the mod teams can get some betas released for us to discuss too!

New maps, modification news, and more!
    7:24:19 PM EST - Eberon
First of all, two new DXMP maps have been released. There is DXMP_Wild_West, available from Beast's Maps. The second map is entitled DXMP_Skyline. Having played earlier versions of this map, I can definitely say that it's of great quality. Be certain to take a look at these two.

That latest map, DXMP_Skyline, comes from one of the more well-known DXMP players, Locke004. He has a new hosted site at Planet Deus Ex entitled Locke004's Deus Ex Dojo.

New things are cropping up all the time at Deus Ex Ed, the latest of which has been a new member, Farlin (congrats!) and a new mini mod entitled Death Awaits Thou (apparently a working title). Death awaits thou can be reached and downloaded here. The description says so far:

    Death Awaits Thou:
A mini-mod that adds weapons to Deus Ex. Death Awaits Thou will be renamed in the future to Warfare Weaponry. This mini-mod is still in works.

Sounds great, be sure to look!

Attention modders! TechTV has an article up that teaches you enough information (hopefully) to get started on working with the SDK. Check it out here. (Thanks Deus-Ex.org)

The Evil shroud has been lifted from Denton's Databank (frames), and a new design awaits you! It's very good, if I do say so myself.

The Universal Constructor is also busy, this time with a tutorial on Custom Barks and Random Events (whatever that means). Give it a look!

Lastly, Modus Moriendi asks for your help. I can't say it better than the man Gartog himself, so I'll let him say it:

We are living in Interesting times. Like the old Chinese curse. Due to lack of stuff happening in the team by some members (Not all). I have an idea! I want everyone reading this who knows how, to to produce somthing for Modus Moriendi. I will try to include everything I recieve. I am not asking you to join the team, after all what's the point? but just to submit a Team DM map or skin or new game type or weapon to help us. Without you we are nothing. Let's all work together. Interested? then please email Gartog@PlanetDeusEx.com.

    Daily website updates.
    8:14:41 PM EST - Eberon
Well, not a whole lot is going on currently, but here's a run-down of what I could spot:

Hey you MP nuts! There's a new map for download at Deus Ex Editing. It's called "Count Castle". The Multiplayer Map list can be reached here.

Wow! Gaming Age is reporting that Deus Ex/Ion Storm was awarded two awards for Action/Adventure game of the year and Innovation in Computer Gaming. We're all very proud of Ion and their talented team!

Raptor from the Warzone Mod sends word that things have finally gotten nailed down and now they are going to be updating again! They have 2 new mappers on the team and 3 new screenies for your enjoyment; a colt, a silenced beretta, and a turret. Be sure to take a gander at what they have.

Edge of Dark, growing DX mod that was recently mentioned in an article at Daily Radar about the DX mod scene has put a few site changes in place and also has some new screenshots for your enjoyment. Be sure to take a look; the mod is progressing very well!

Well, that's about it for now. More updates later.

Valuable DXMP strategies available at Mac Deus Ex.
    11:47:13 PM EST - Eberon
Excellent news! Mac Deus Ex sends word of a new series of guides to be released for the MP maps available in the latest patches. The first one covers the Area 51 Bunker, and I must say that it is VERY well written. If you are at all serious about DXMP, be SURE to read this guide. Straight from Robert Baird, a staffer:

Announcing the first ever Deus Ex MP Mac Guide, available at MacDeusEx.com

The first guide released is for the map "Area 51 Bunker" and goes into detail about different locations and how to get there successfully. Once there the guide suggests different weapons and augmentations that are sure to increase your frags and guarantee your longevity.

    Go read it now!.

    And the news rolls in..
    7:34:18 PM EST - Eberon
In the dark night of empty news sites, Deus Ex Machina shines through with a blinding ray of light...

Well, without further ado, I'll spin right into the latest modification happenings:

Modus Moriendi continues its search for the best Deus Ex/Modus Moriendi wallpaper. Today, they have a new entry. Be sure to go over there and check it out in the competition section of their site. Entries can be sent right Gartog

An updated version of the famous Mod Loader is available at Team UC's website. It fixes a problem with teleporters not functioning correctly. Nonetheless, be sure to keep up to date.

The Providence team needs members, specifically modelers and coders. If you have the talent, please send your information this way.

Don't know how I missed this, but the Universal Constructor posted a new conversations tutorial on Sunday that details goals, notes, skill points, and credits! It can be found here.

Excellent! Edge of Dark has two new team members! Taken directly from the news post:

"I would like to extend a warm welcome to two new members, Ashley Graham, who joins us as a writer, and Alastair Douglas, who will be mapping for us. We also opened new forums, which you can get to by the forums link. If you have any suggestions or questions about the mod, now you can ask them!"

The forums can be directly accessed here.

Well, that looks to be it for now. I'll keep you updated as soon as I find another piece of information. I have been quite busy lately, but I will soon have a few new things put up for you to admire. Stay tuned.

    Redsun 2020 fleshes it out
    7:24:44 PM EST - Eberon
After their announcement of a reorganization and change of focus, the Redsun 2020 mod has revised its snapshots section to accurately reflect the new focus and other changes. Taken from the man (Odaiba) himself:

(Snapshot revision - - You will notice in our snapshot library, I deleted a few of our shots. The ones that were deleted are out-of-date or the level has been completely revised so previous shots do not represent our current work. The bank and Tokyo Station are completely being revised. The Pink Castle Disco also got a remake and now is called GALAXY Disco. In the beginning of May, we will be releasing brand new shots showing off our most recent work. :)

    Web updates.
    7:21:28 PM EST - Eberon
Hey! Got a slew of new stuff for you today:

Public Enemy released a few new maps at Deus Ex Center. Be sure to take a look, they're pretty good!

There's a new mod on the horizon, and the name of the game is Illuminati 2072. Taken straight from the introduction:

"You are Dari Kenton, a badass jack-of-all-trades for the Illuminati, and your job is to make sure that the Illuminati's secrets are never revealed. To enhance your abilities, you have been nano-augmented. These aren't your mothers nano-augs either. They've been upgraded with the latest modules, straight from Morgan Everett Industries, and you will always have the ability to pick up more. It is the year 2072, and the world is in chaos yet again. Riots are breaking out, and thousands are dying. Worse, conspiracy theories are starting to circulate, and suspicion of the government is beginning to build. The Illuminati leadership has drafted you to find the source of these rumors and stamp them out. Your primary responsibilities are as follows: 1) To neutralize any threat to the Illuminati's security posed by the new rumors, and 2) To put out the riots and restore order to the streets. The Illuminati will provide you with any weapons you may need, and may assign new goals periodically. Good luck soldier!"

    Sounds promising!

Deus Fortress has updated with a neat timeline that outlines the events between Deus Ex 1 and where the mod comes in. Give it a looksee.

Modus Moriendi snuck in and updated with two new pages of skins, the first one here and the second here. Take a look, they're pretty darn good.

Well, that's it for now. Stay tuned.

The sad closing of a loved site
    2:13:49 PM EST - Eberon
At least, loved by me. The Deus Ex Multiplayer Database has closed its doors. At first, they were the only site to host new maps and review them. After almost two months of silence, the owner has announced that he no longer has time to keep the site running. Either from Real-Life (shudder) problems or lack of interest, or maybe a combination of both. Don't worry, though, you can still get your DXMP (and SP) love from DX Editing!

Speaking of DXEditing, they have a full review of "TheManor" now. Check it out here.

    A few updates
    2:06:54 PM EST - Eberon
Hmm, what's new in the Deus Ex world? Let's see here...

The X-strain is almost "fully" stocked with team members. All they need now is a coder. Apply if you have the talent!

Modus Moriendi continues to rage on, and now they have three good looking skins! Be sure to also send in your wallpaper for their contest.

In addition to the tutorials I reported a few days ago, the Universal Constructor has three new tutorials. One on choices and object transfers in conversations, another on infolinks, and yet another on water. Wowee, the Universal Constructor is really pumping out those tutorials!

Yikes, The Terrorism Mod is looking for new members. They have lost three of them just recently. They're looking for talents, so if you're interested, head over there.

More updates to come later tonight!

    Deus Ex Mention in CGM
    11:03:41 AM EST - BackDoorBandit
Jonah Falcon of GamePen has sent word of Deus Ex being mentioned as a nominee in the Computer Games Magazine 'Best of 2000' awards. Here's what the email said.

Computer Games Magazine announced its Best of 2000 list. Deux Ex was nominated for Best Action and Best RPG, while Thief II was nominated for Best Action. Both lost (Action when to No One Lives Forever, while RPG went to Baldur's Gate II).

However, many editors mentioned Deux Ex as a top 5 game of the year.

The issue is the April 2001 issue.

Thanks Jonah for the heads up.

    Newbie DX Journal
    10:56:21 AM EST - BackDoorBandit
Fixer, from the TTLG forums, has donated his services to our site. He is a newbie to the DX world and he just recently got the game. He is currently playing the game for his very first time, and he is keeping a journal of his thoughts and encounters. He has submitted the first jounal entry in a line of very many, and I will post it as soon as I edit it.

    'Terrorism' Has Been Terrorized
    10:03:54 AM EST - BackDoorBandit
DeusEx.org is reporting a big hit to the staff of of the Terrorism Mod. I checked out the Terrorism website, and indeed, they were terrorized themselves by REAL LIFE.

The have lost Lone-Fox, their only coder; OmegaI, who in the words of Phonix is "...an extremely talented modeller"; and Pnonix himself, the teams webmaster. All is not lost though, for they have gained a mapper/texure artist by the name of Messiah, and Nice-But-Dim has rejoined the team as a story writer.

Well, it seems they fought off the terrorist who tried terrorizing them, and even provided a little counter-terrorism.

    'Counterfeit'......A New Mod
    9:37:37 AM EST - BackDoorBandit
Deus Ex Center has word of a new Mod on their website that goes by the name of 'Counterfeit'.

I ventured over to the Counterfeit site and gabbed a little bit of the story for you. Below is a piece from their story section.

Sometime in the not-so-distant future, tension between the nations of the world began to grow stronger and stronger due to the planet's supply of natural resources becoming weaker and weaker. It began a good deal of corruption, and among the scandals and conflict that began to pop up, unexpected chaos.

So appeared such organizations as the United Nations' Reformation Coalition (or the UNRC); basically, a fancy name for a solid group of mercenaries that could be paid to snoop around. Missions of intelligence gathering and stealth were not uncommon.

Get on over there and checkout the rest of the story for yourself, as well as their whole site for that matter.

    Modus Moriendi Competition
    9:29:05 AM EST - BackDoorBandit
Modus Moriendi is holding a competition to see who can make the best Desktop art for their Mod. Below is what's posted on their competition page.

A chance to win Fame and Fortune.

Well fame anyway, all you have to do is design a Deus Ex or Modus Moriendi Desktop wallpaper for the Modus Moriendi Desktop. I will post entries below. The first two are wallpapers designed by Das Amigo. The previous web designer.

Images must be 1024x768 and use only 256 colors. The best entries will be included with the Modus Moriendi Mod. and maybe we'll find you a prize from somwhere (If your lucky).

email all entries in .jpg or .gif format to Gartog@planetdeusex.com

You know what to do. If you've got the skills, then get to work on your entry and show them what you've got.

    Wow! Mystery site discovered.
    10:37:46 PM EST - Eberon

Wow! One of our forum-goers, Halliwell (eek, a Spice Girl?), pointed out this site. My favorite things there are a huge spoilers section and secrets section. For those of you that played Unreal online, you probably remember the "waiting room" that you were in while the game loaded and connected. Apparently, the Deus Ex team created such a room for Deus Ex. It can be reached by typing "disconnect" into the console. I haven't tried it yet, so please report to me if this has been covered up by a patch.

Another neat thing I found was mention of an actual USE for cigarettes! Apparently, you can temporarily disable laser trips with cigarettes and fire extinguishers! Whacky stuff, guys. Be sure to go over there and check out all the rest.

Update: Busted! I just checked out the team page, and Halliwell is on staff! Halliwell, you've been busted for self-pimpage. Aw hell, it's okay. We here at Deus Ex Machina aren't in a competition (we know we're #1 ;).

New tutorial at the Universal Constructor.
    8:24:37 PM EST - Eberon
Well, I was doing my daily news rounds, and the Universal Constructor has updated with a new conversation tutorial! Please also be sure to email them if you can help out.

    Ooooh, aahhh.
    7:20:31 PM EST - Eberon
A treat! The Dune Mod has been through some changes recently, but we here at Deus Ex Machina are happy to see that they have come through the tunnel! New for you today is an Exclusive new screenshot/piece of concept art for you. It's the Crysknife from the mod, and boy does it look great so far! You can choose from the menu to the right to see past images, or click on the image of the week to see an enlarged version.

Also another update: Soon, I'll be coding up another neat addition to the site, courtesy of a reader. Stay with us for more treats!

The conclusion to our three part series, Thief: To The Next Level, is up for your viewing pleasure. Thief: To The Next Level----Conclusion

    News news news
    12:17:27 PM EST - Eberon
A slew of news for you today:

Enter: Deus Ex Zone, a new German site
A new German Deus Ex site reported in, and is now open here. A warm welcome to the community, Deus Ex Zone!

    New MP map
Deus Ex Editing reports that there is a new map available entitled "The Manor". Here's what DXE had to say about it:

GabrielSyme's "TheManor" combines open ground with close quarter action. This could soon become a favorite battleground.

Get over and download it if that's your thang.

    Win cool stuff
Don't forget, Planet Deus Ex is hosting a contest to see who can make the coolest map! Visit the Map Contest info page for more information.

Resistance is futile, Essadarius and Elite Ops join the collective
If you haven't already heard, Modus Moriendi has taken in the remnants of the dead mods Elite Ops and Essadarius. New team members and ideas are flowing in. Looks like MM will live to see another day.

    Load up the Mod Loader
The Mod Loader that can be found at Team UC's website has been updated again to work with some issues introduced by the latest patch.

I will flood you with links!
Now on to the mod news. There's tons of it so hang in there.

Deus Fortress is in dire need of a modeler or two that can make the model and get it into the game themselves. Skinning ability is also a plus.

Indecision, one of the latest mods to hit the scene, has been updating quite frequently. They already have some screenshots as well as a poll that you should vote in. Be sure to see what they're about!

Deus Ex Ed has a new tutorial that will show you how to make your own windows, as well as a new "mini-mod" that will allow you to play the game as other characters. Not sure what the advantage of this is (wow yourself?), but it might be worth the fun.

Not being able to recall what I reported on and what I didn't, the Universal Constructor has a Fog tutorial, an updated Datacube tutorial that will show you how to adapt to the new patch, as well as an updated e-mail tutorial for the same reason.

I apologize for not being very fervent about the news lately, but be sure that I will be doing more regular reports. Also, look forward to some new content which will probably surprise or interest you. Stay tuned for all the news, articles, and funstuff you can handle!

    Harvey Smith on Stomped
    10:35:54 AM EST - BackDoorBandit
Stomped.com has up an article entitled, 'What if...? Game Developers Speak'. In this article they have asked several top notch gaming industry personnel, "What would your favorite titles be like if they were put in another genre?" As the title of this post suggest, Harvey Smith is one of the key personnel who responds in this article, and his response is found below.

"I'd love to see a Deus Ex strategy game where the player is a VersaLife lab technician controlling a small eco-tank full of genetically manipulated creatures. Each 'level' would involve solving some problem (simple at first, complex and multipart later). The VL tech's goal would be to rapidly breed and train some Frankensteinian genetic freak creature to solve the problem for each level. For instance, the player would start with stock animal genome materials from the Deus Ex universe (pigeons, greasels, dogs, karkians, fish, et al). In the simplest level, the player would need to breed and train a creature capable of navigating a maze and flipping a switch. Later, using the stock creatures, plus the genetics for any creatures of his own design, the player would need to breed a creature capable of navigating an underwater maze in the dark, defeating a sentry creature (or bot), retrieving an object from a hazardous environment, etc."

    Harvey Smith Interview
    10:13:44 AM EST - BackDoorBandit
Dave Perry, the founder of Shiny Entertainment, has produced an interview with Harvey Smith on his personal website. www.dperry.com is Daves' personal web page, and it contains a nice array of information pertaining to the gaming industy. His latest work on the site is, of course, the interview with Harvey Smith. Below is a piece of the interview to wet your appetite.

When designing a game, how much do you REALLY have to think about any issues that could create negative publicity or restrict sales - like violence, nudity or sexism?

I have little respect for the objectivity or intelligence behind much of the "thinking" people have done vis-à-vis video games and violence. People have always been violent. People often react negatively to new media. People usually look for a 'silver bullet' simple answer to explain away things that disturb them. Most of the studies I've seen tend to confuse "aggressive play" with "the desire to hurt." After watching Sinbad movies as kids, my brother and I would wrestle on the carpet or have mock sword-fights with sticks. We never confused this with the intent to harm one another. Concurrent with the last round of violent-event sparked video game censorship talks in the US, the news agencies were saying that the violent crime level was lower than it had been in years; the murder rate was lower than it had been in decades. That said, violence in and of itself is not interesting to me. It's not at the heart of my goals as a game designer, nor do I think it's necessary for good, commercially viable games. (Last year, Pokemon Snap was one of my favorite games.) Whenever I feel like the game (or simulator) we're working on needs tension, I will use violence if it feels appropriate. Just like the creators of a novel or movie would.

This isn't going to be the only interview on Daves' site of top men and women in the computer gaming industry, so be sure to check his site on a regular basis.

Deus Ex GOTY and FM contest
    9:37:28 PM EST - Eberon
Yowzers! Deus Ex is going to be released in Game of the Year format. Let's hope that the GOTY format is worthy of the name and price! Planet Deus Ex has a cool shot of the box art. It looks pretty much the same, just a little more flashy (What the box should have been, in my opinion).

In addition to this, PDX has also started up their own Fan Mission contest. There are TONS of great prizes, so be sure to check out the Planet Deus Ex home page and its contest page for more info.

    Deus Ex Patch Release Update
    6:21:19 PM EST - BackDoorBandit
It seems that Gamespot UK has jumped the gun, trying to get their name in the book as the first to have the Deus Ex Final Patches. BluesNews has an update on their site regarding the release of the patches, and I can only agree with them because when they're finally released, Mike McHale of Eidos usually informs all fan sites, and I haven't heard a word from him.

It certainly is a shame when websites jump the gun because they feel they have to be first at everything. In the long run it hurts the relationships built up between gaming industry PR people and the gaming news sites people. Lets all hope this isn't the case.

I have emailed Mike, and will let you know what he says about the patches.

Update: Mike has responded, and the patches are indeed final versions. You can get them from Gamespot UK or The Adrenaline Vault. Sadly, Fileplanet still does not have a mirror.

    New Deus Ex Patch!
    4:32:58 PM EST - Eberon
I haven't had the time to check it out yet, but the Adrenaline Vault is reporting that there is a new Deus Ex patch out! Grab it now!

I'll be honest with you guys and say that I'm not sure what's new with this patch. I haven't gotten it downloaded yet, and the descriptions I've read so far don't say much at all. Stay tuned for an update.

    DX-Machina Site Update
    2:14:26 PM EST - BackDoorBandit
A lot has been going on around here lately, both good and bad, and I just ask for your continuing support.

As you all know, we launched Thief: To The Next Level, a 3 part interview looking at two of the most anticipated Mod's ever in the Thief community. Part 2 of this interview will be up tomorrow night or Saturday afternoon.

On another note, Eberon got into a car accident and hasn't been able to help out on the site much because of his recovery, and I've been sick the last two days with the flu, so I too haven't been able to work on the site much.

Please stay with us in our trying times here, we have alot of great things instore for you all, including another fantastic interview following the Thief: To The Next Level series.
