RPGVault Covers GDC
8:43:52 AM EST - Dan
RPGVault.IGN.com was good enough to report on the activities of ION Storm and Arkane at the Game Developer's Conference. Hence:
Arx Fatalis. Two Askane [sic] Studios team members made the long trip from France, and I was able to chat briefly with Lead Designer Raphael Colantonio. He reported that the team is busy fixing bugs and polishing, and said the game is on track for release this summer. He also stated that he was generally pleased with reaction to the demo that was released recently, and that he hopes to see some more publicity for the game as it approaches release.

ION Storm. Studio Director Warren Spector was among the busiest individuals at the show with at least half a dozen sessions on his schedule. Among these were some for the International Games Developers Association where he is one of the leaders in the area of educational programs. Harvey Smith and Randy Smith, the Project Directors of Deus Ex 2 and Thief 3, both participated in a couple of sessions as did Doug Church, the studio’s recently appointed Technical Director. I also met Designer Ricardo Bare and Composer Alex Brandon. Little in the way of solid information was forthcoming about either project, but both teams definitely feel they can improve on the preceding ones, which would make both fine games indeed.

Now, please be kind and dash over to the RPG Vault and read the rest of the report, because I know that most of you want to know about NWN, Morrowind, and Dungeon Siege too. :)

Mod Update: Carone
4:50:55 PM EST - Dave
Carone, author of the upcoming Single Player mod, Hotel Carone, has updated one of his mini-mods CaroneElevator Set. It's currently at version 1.5!
Check out his site for more info!
Cheers Carone!

Business not as usual.
8:13:52 AM EST - Eberon
Some of you may have noticed the lack of daily updates lately.

If you're reading this, you probably have noticed. The story behind this is simple: For the past few days, I've been tying up some last things before I go on a mini-vacation of approximately one week. During that time, Dave'll try to be up to snuff with what's going on, but he isn't feeling all that well either.

Bear with us! We'll be back in full swing soon enough. I just need a break, and I certainly deserve one! Happy spring everyone :)

Big big news.
11:59:02 AM EST - Eberon
Not really, but little little lots of news ;)

-Terrorism has some great screenies on their front page of the weapons that'll be included in their release. Be sure to give them a look -- they look very nice!

-Deus Ex World has received some updates to many of their sections. Be sure to use the right side english menu when visiting. Well, that is, unless you're really german.

-The Deus Ex Community Based Patch has added screenshots of their finished in-game map list editor to their site. Soon, mapsize will also be modifyable! Horay for the patch! While you're there, too, be sure to stop by in their forums

-Skyward Fires has had an additional mapper added to their team, and Geordi, a coder from DX Coop, will be assisting them with his talents as well. Cheers all around.

We do apologize for the lack of news during the week. Things have been slow though, and Dave and I have been incredibly incapacitated. Another issue of the mod tabletalk feature is coming out this weekend, so stick with us!

8:39:10 PM EST - Eberon
The Disclosure project, steadily in development, has recently released a few more screens from its levels. This time, we get to see some shots from the second level, titled Hell's Gate. There are some pretty nice looking scenes! Check 'em out in the screenshots section.

Chat logs.
8:23:55 PM EST - Eberon
Missed out on our ISA DX PS2 chat on Friday evening? A few logs have surfaced. There's one here and there's one here. The latter is formatted a little more for the eyes, but take your pick. In any event, enjoy!

RIFTS mod updates.
10:12:58 AM EST - Eberon
The RIFTS mod has been working hard to fill their team positions. As of right now, the only team members that they remain in need of are voice actors and one more mapper. You can join up with their team here, or at least see what they're all about here. There are also a few good looking screenshots here! Check them out!

GameSpyDaily interview and screenshots -- PS2
10:10:40 AM EST - Eberon
GameSpyDaily has published an interview and some screenshots of the Playstation 2 conversion of Deus Ex, which is coming out very soon.

You can find the interview here, linked on the screenshots page. An excerpt of the interview follows: GameSpyDaily: What is the best aspect of the PS2 version over the PC game?

Steve Powers: We have simplified and streamlined the interface so that the player has efficient control over the game's many functions. In the PC release we had a very complex interface for using objects, augmentations, interacting with the world, inventory, and other game screens. Now, because we had to work within the constraints of the controller, the player can use all of these same features, but it is much simpler and quicker. Also, there is never a need to take your eyes off the screen to activate a control, where in the PC version orienting your fingers on the keyboard required glancing down from time to time... Well, it did for me, anyway.

Character animations and models are also much cleaner and prettier. The PS2 gives us much more capability in these areas, and I think the allies and enemies are a generation above the PC versions.

Funny how we promote Gamespy's content more than gamespy network sites do, eh? ;)

Special Forces updates.
10:06:51 AM EST - Eberon
Yep, we're finally back in the saddle when it comes to news. I had a busy week last week, and so did Dave, so there!

Special Forces has pushed out a couple of updates in the past days. First and foremost, there's a new member on the team; Ben "Draake" Donatelli, who will be doing some programming for the project. There are also a couple of level screenshots, which are always a real treat. Be sure to see those on their website today.

Ordinance no more.
10:03:49 AM EST - Eberon
The Ordinance project is no more. Both major team members have thrown in the towel after the project leader was lured in by another project working with the Quake engine.

In the wake of this closure, of course, comes the reality that the community's death to birth ratio is still 1:2, giving us two new projects, roughly, for every one dead. With not enough talent to go around as it is, the mix is thinning even more. Unfortunate, it is. Thoughts? Share them in our forums.

News on the Creative DX tunes.
4:57:59 PM EST - Eberon
Great news! Alex Brandon, the man himself, got ahold of me to give me a little information regarding those music files we reported on a while back. Here's what he had to say:

Apologies to the poor souls who tried to listen to the files on Creative's site. :(

For those with late model Sound Blaster Live! and Audigy cards, use Creative's PlayCenter. WinAMP doesn't play AC3s because...

AC3 is a Dolby Digital format that requires 6 speakers.. you know, your average surround sound setup these days. You'll need the card as well as a digital output to a decoder, usually found in a home reciever that says "Dolby Digital" on it. Good luck! These are just surround remixes of original DX1 songs that I did for Creative.. the original 2 channel versions are found in DX Game of the Year's soundtrack.

-Alex

Hip hip horay! There you have it.

3:16:48 PM EST - Dave
Carone, one of the regulars over at the TTLG irc channel #thief, has nearly finished his single player mission for Deus Ex called Hotel Carone

Cheers Carone!

Feature article/interview: The Multi-mod interview.
9:23:19 PM EST - Eberon
Hello there fans!

A while ago I had an idea for what has come to you tonight. I thought that a group of as many mod teams as I could possibly muster answering questions regarding their ideas and opinions behind mod design would hopefully both interest the community and other mod teams, hopefully fostering a little more friendly competition and thought.

This first installment is a little rough, I must admit, but something of this magnitude is awfully tricky to pull together! The next installment will hopefully show up in about one and a half to two weeks. If you have any questions or prompts that you think would bring out some wonderful information from the community, please send them to us!

So without further delay, I bring you the the first installment. Read and enjoy. Encourage your favorite project to participate if they already don't. But most of all, enjoy!

Exclusive IRC Chat with Ion Storm!
12:31:56 PM EST - Dave
Wow, two Ion Storm Exclusives within a couple of weeks of each other! We should feel very lucky!

Following our Exclusive Interview with Bill Money and the rest of the Deus Ex: The Conspiracy team, we are proud to be hosting an IRC chat with them!

On Friday March 15th at 5PM CST in the Official TTLG IRC Channel: #thief on IRC.Starchat.Net you will have the chance to put questions to several of the Ion Storm team behind Deus Ex The Conspiracy and the upcoming Deus Ex 2.
For those not in the CST Timezone, you can use the converter here to tell you the time in you country. For those unsure of how to use IRC, you need a client to connect to the server. Two such clients are mIRC or pIRCh. Both come with clear instructions on how to use them.

These type of public chats with dev teams don't occur often, so make the most of it!

See you there!

New Ionstorm.com things coming!
4:34:05 PM EST - Eberon
New goodies are about to show up at our door at the newly revised and updated Ion Storm site. There isn't much actual news to report on, however, one thing is clear: new Thief forums will be opening, and Deus Ex forums will be returning! Rejoice!

The Nameless Mod has opened its doors!
10:56:17 PM EST - Eberon
The Nameless Mod, a project that has been in the works for some time has opened the doors of its website to the public. The fact that this project has "been in the works" should be taken quite literally -- there's already some good progress made on it. For instance, there are some truly impressive models and objects in the media section. Be sure to pay them a visit. As always, the little what-how-when-where-why from the story follows:

The world of the forum boards is in chaos, its citizenry divided between 3 major factions. Crime is at an all time high, people are disappearing and rumours of strange things are abound.

WorldCorp Inc. owned by the eccentric billionaire Scara B. King seeks to gain control of the entire corporate world and will use any means necessary to achieve its goals. Whether it is corporate espionage, blackmail or murder, Scara will stop at nothing. Some call the tycoon mad, but as he points out, it is a fine line between genius and insanity.

The Llama religious fanatics seek not corporate power but power over peoples minds. The high priests of this bizarre Llama worshiping religion have recruited millions, and thousands more join each day. At the very top of their hierarchy is the one they call The Leader, shrouded in mystery he controls everything in their religion. Citizens who join become virtual slaves of the high priests, turning over everything they own to The Leader. They must quit their jobs and work at the Llama temples, deep underground. It has even been whispered that The Leader will one day take them in his UFO to the planet of the Llamas where they will have utter bliss.

The third power in this strange and twisted world is the Goat worshippers, also a religion; its origins are shrouded in mystery. No one knows who leads this cult; only a select few are permitted to join. And if chosen they are must leave their homes and journey to the mysterious Goat city. No one knows where the city is, many have tried to locate it, but the Goat followers exact a deadly revenge on anyone attempting to find it. It has been rumoured that this cult is responsible for the disappearing citizenry, but no one know what they may do with their kidnapped victims.

Terrorism created; Special Forces and Terrorism merge.
4:16:20 PM EST - Eberon
In what might be the fastest rearrangement of a project yet, the Terrorism : The Freedom Fight project was created and soonafter merged with the Special Forces project. In a stroke of brilliance, the teams decided to specialize, and the Terrorism team will be working the MP component of Special Forces, allowing the SF team to continue its work on other areas. So far, so good! They're undoubtedly in need of team, however, so be sure to give them a look over and see what you might be able to help out with.

Disclosure Interview @ Modpages.com
4:13:43 PM EST - Eberon
Modpages, which recently opened an area for the Deus Ex Community, just recently finished pushing out an interview with Face over his Disclosure mod. The interview hits on some pretty interesting points that we at De-M haven't covered in any of our discussions with him, so be sure to give it a read and be educated and whatnot.

Paladin X updates.
4:09:48 PM EST - Eberon
It's been a while since our last update -- I seem to get very busy on the weekends, lately, but seeing as, it seems, our hit counts are low on the weekends anyway, it doesn't matter so much, eh? :)

The Paladin X project now has access to a microphone, so they report. Revamping on one or more of the levels is commencing as well, which will, hopefully, create a much more unique atmosphere!
