Thanks to our friends at DXEditing for pointing out that Hotel Carone, a roughly 28MB downloadable fan mission for Deus Ex, has been released today! Be sure to grab this one -- I have already heard many good things! We'll be adding it to our suddenly growing fan mission page soon. Be sure to hit DXediting for a good list of mirrors.

MUST read interview!
11:31:59 AM EST - Eberon
|
Our beloved project director Harvey Smith was interviewed recently by Gaming Horizon. The interview which has now been published includes a few brand spanking new screenshots and some tasty information on some of the gameplay decisions the guys have been making over there. Following, among other questions, is a sample of what you simply cannot pass up on reading:
GH: What are some of the big differences between your previous engine and your new one? How will they benefit the (stealth) gameplay?
HS: The new technology is very much cutting edge. The sound propagation, AI, physics and lighting are all new. (We're using Havok for physics.) To cite one example of how these technologies have gameplay ramifications: In the new engine, a sound is bounced around realistically (instead of being a simple go-through-walls radius broadcast) and is muffled or echoed by the surface materials in the world. So if you make sound while robbing an office, it matters if there's carpet on the floor, if the office window is intact and if the door is closed. Without those things, the sounds will bounce more and guards in the hall beyond are more likely to be alerted.
Once again, you can read the interview here

Whoops
10:25:57 AM EST - Eberon
|
I missed these a few days ago -- I've been wrapped up in Ultra Secret Project No. 1. At any rate...
The Crimson Death site has been updated with a brand new design! Not much else is reported, but if you have anything nice to say about the site design you can contact them here.
Congratulations goes out to Trestkon of TNM for joining up with DXEditing and writing his first tutorial on 2D shapes. The TNM project has also gained a new team member, Kryss, who will be doing models and animations. They've also got a new screenshot on their website, so be sure to pay them a visit.

Cold Hearted updates!
12:03:47 AM EST - Eberon
|
After a long period of silence, the Ravaged Entertainment website has been updated with great news. Work on the project has been steadily continuing and that things are moving along well. This is proven by a good handful of screenshots that have been posted of both the Cold Hearted project and a DXMP map that is currently in development.
So be sure to stay tuned to their website over the next few months; they're making things happen!

PCGamer mini-scoop: DX Movie.
10:26:44 AM EST - Eberon
|
This month's coming PCGamer has a small 2/3 page report on the Deus Ex movie. Admittedly (and understandably) at the time of press not much has been accomplished but the assigning of the writer and the producer. The producer is none other than Laura Zisken, of the Spider-Man movie fame, and the writer: Greg Pruss (who contributed, reportedly, to Alien3, among other things).
As far as E3 coverage goes, I'm sad to report that there's nothing more than a two sentence blurb in a sidebar. Ah well -- I'm certain that DX2 will have more front-page stories to come.

Team needed, other news.
2:56:10 PM EST - Eberon
|
The Deus Ex World project is still in need of someone with good modeling skills. Be sure to drop them a line at their website if you can assist them. And even if you can't help, be sure to drop by to see what's new, which I hear includes a new screenshot of one of their finished DM maps.
I also hear that DX Prequel is looking for a good webmaster. Got what it takes? Head over there and apply!

Steve Tack's ZODIAC released!
11:41:37 AM EST - Eberon
|
Steve Tack, of much deus ex editing fame, has released the first part of his great series of maps in his single player campaign. You can find it, finally, on our fan missions section. HUGE thanks goes out to Mr. Jason L Tibbitts for mirroring for us! Here's what's going on in this campaign:
ZODIAC branches off from the storyline of Deus Ex. In Deus Ex, you played JC Denton, but in ZODIAC, you play his brother Paul Denton.
At the start of ZODIAC, you (Paul) have narrowly avoided death at the hands of the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition (UNATCO) after several agents and troops show up at your apartment in New York City. With the help of JC, you manage to escape. In Deus Ex, it was possible for Paul to be killed, but in ZODIAC, it is assumed that JC does save him.
An arms dealer named Smuggler then helps you get to Hong Kong; your brother JC has made an alliance with a scientist named Tracer Tong who lives there. Tong was able to recently remove JC's "kill switch" in his underground laboratory.
Paul had been a double agent for both UNATCO and the National Secessionist Force (NSF). UNATCO considers the NSF nothing more than a terrorist group, and in fact, they do resort to terrorism to further their cause. Their main concern is the proliferation of a deadly plague called the Gray Death. They believe that the cure, known as Ambrosia, is being purposely held back by secret organizations. Paul's loyalties are with the NSF.
When you start the game, you will be playing Paul Denton and you will be at Tracer Tong's lab in Hong Kong; JC has already left on an important mission related to stopping the Gray Death. Talk to Tracer and Alex about a little mission of your own. Unfortunately, UNATCO has enabled your kill switch, so you'll have to find new augmentations to replace your existing ones, which have been permanently disabled.
Be sure to check this one out, folks. The webpage for it (may be moved soon) is here.

Deus Ex World - new team, new design!
7:13:14 PM EST - Eberon
|
Deus Ex World sends word that they have some new team members; they have a pair of translators (Tranquilite and Ghargoil), a new coder (Talon60K), and a new composer (Will). They're still looking for a few more team members though.
They're also working on their website. You can see some of their progress by visiting their front page

And here, ladies and gentlemen, is your infolink.
1:49:50 AM EST - Eberon
|
C|Net Reports:
The "tooth phone" consists of a tiny vibrator and a radio wave receiver implanted into a tooth during routine dental surgery. The phone was designed by James Auger and Jimmy Loizeau.
The implant does not yet have its own microchip installed, but Auger says the technology is tried and tested, and a fully functional phone could be put together in no time at all.
...
Sound, which comes into the tooth as a digital radio signal, is transferred to the inner ear by bone resonance, meaning information can be received anywhere and at any time--and nobody else can listen in.
Very interesting! I'm sure that government agencies will find a great use for this technology. No more wires going down the back of the neck!

TNM - An interactive story?
4:36:37 PM EST - Eberon
|
The Nameless Mod has released what they call an interactive story (much like choose your own adventure books) which allows you to navigate through the storyline based on your own decisions. Be sure to check it out, and thank Jonas (of PDX fame, I believe) for the work he's done on it!
In addition, this team too is looking for a coder with some serious skills. If you think you can help, drop them a line here.
My favorite line from their story follows:
"Yeah, damnit, It's DXI. No one ever visits it. Notice it's (sic) vague similarities to PDX" said DD.

Deus Ex World online updates.
4:34:45 PM EST - Eberon
|
Deus Ex World sends word that they are in need of some more team; they need one or two coders, a musician, one or two modellers, and some mappers.
In addition, on their project website they have a LOAD of information and screenshots of their work. There are some map shots (which include weapon models), there is some information on some new net code they've apparently written, and some wallpaper. While on the subject of news, the team is also looking for a bilingual (German/English) person who can speak and translate information back and forth between the two languages. Kind souls interested in helping can apply here. Be sure to visit their site and see what's new! There are some very interesting things!

Deus Ex 2 Gameplay Vid
10:14:33 PM EST - Dan
|
GameStar.de has posted up a snip of the Deus Ex 2 gameplay vid they're going to be putting on their cover disc. The snip is on this page, and unfortunatly, will eventually vanish off the bottom of the page and this link will be a dud in a few months or more. I could do a direct link to the file, but that would be just wrong of me.
Ahem. Yes, download the video, and see the ultra pretty real time shadow rendering of a very cool bot (eat your hearts out, lame-ass SS2 bots! ;) and a little bit of combat (very little).

IBM developing Nanotech punch cards.
1:47:21 AM EST - Eberon
|
This is an interesting story. IBM is currently developing a punchcard which will have a capacity FAR exceeding anything we currently see today. Of course, nanotech technology is far from being in our homes still, but perhaps some day we'll all have "plate-burners" with nanotech hot-needles instead of optical lasers. Here's the scoop:
Researchers at International Business Machines Corp. have punched holes about 6,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair in a piece of plastic, creating a novel form of data storage.
After six years of work the Zurich-based researchers say they can fit 1 terabit of data -- effectively the contents of a 100-gigabyte computer hard drive -- on a postage stamp-size piece of plastic.
The data takes the form of up to a trillion holes drilled by a precise and extremely hot nano-needle, the researchers said.
This story is well worth a look!

Gamespot & Harvey Smith -- New shots, too!
9:23:14 PM EST - Eberon

Gamespot interviewed Harvey Smith and unleashed the results today right here. Information is still (understandably) scarce, but this is definitely a must read! There are a couple awesome looking shots as well. Thanks goes to TechImmortal from the Cabal for pointing this one out!

TNM updates.
6:56:17 PM EST - Eberon
|
The Nameless Mod has updated with a few new goodies; there's a new wallpaper image for your perusal, alongside the first one released in their media section. There is also a little more content in the arena of the project's storyline on its (you guessed it) story page! The about page has also been updated with a feature list of sorts.
Another mapper has joined the team as well. He goes by the handle of Spaceman. Hopefully he'll be doing some wonderful work for the project!

High-res DX2 screenies.
12:52:31 AM EST - Eberon
|
I'm not sure if these have been reported on before (I've seen so much DX media that it's burned into my retinas), but one of our forum-goers points out some screenshots which he has linked here. They are pretty darned high-resolution and look fantastic! Give 'em a looksee and be sure to post your observations :) Thanks, BR796164!
Update: I am also informed that these are located as well at the Official Deus Ex 2 site. In any event, give 'em a look!

Nameless Mod updates again!
11:33:28 PM EST - Eberon

The Nameless Mod has updated their website once again with a brand new progress applet that will hopefully let us all know how work is progressing on the project! Additionally, they send over this image for your enjoyment. This (below) is a shot of Sol's bar, a map authored by Hao. Great work!
