What's ISA Working With?
11:50:44 AM EST - BackDoorBandit
There has been some confusion about what engine ISA is working with. Is it the Unreal Warfare engine? Is it the Unreal 2 engine?

In an interview on Unreal Center Mark Poesch of Legend Entertainment cleared things up a bit. Below is the question and answer from the interview.

Q. A lot of people are wondering what the Differnce between the UW engine and the U2 engine is? Such as Niko 65 pointed out, not a lot of people know this, could you explain?

Mark’s Answer: Unreal II is based on the latest version of the Unreal engine - sometimes called the “Warfare engine” in the press and in the community. Many of our subsystems have been modified and augmented to an extent that our engine and Epic's are different. But, at its core, Unreal II is powered by the Warfare engine.

Now that that's cleared up, you also have to remember that ISA will be implementing...ooops, can't go there.

To further your knowledge of what the boys in that Austin based hell hole (Can you imagine working for Warren Spector? What a bummer ;) are working with, here's another piece of the interview that was also answered by Mark.

Q.Now Mike, we are wondering, How is it, as Hors 24 pointed out, that the U2 engine can handle up to 10 times more Poly’s than the UT engine, is there any technical specifics you want to spew forth here? Is Direct X 9 already an issue in your , i presume totally directX 8 optimised U2 engine ? Without havin' to inform us what specificly, is there any access already for you guys regarding DirectX 9 specs ?

Mark’s Answer: The original rendering pipeline used in both Unreal and UT was optimized for software rendering. It was optimal for creating high-quality scenes on systems with minimal or no 3D support. Unreal II and the Warfare engine have cut software support, and embraced the capabilities offered by GeForce and higher-performance cards. This means that instead of computing lighting for every poly, we can set up the lights, and dump raw polys at the card at a tremendous rate, and let the card do much more of the work.

Well, I guess that just puts the icing on the cake for us all...at least for the time being.

Cassandra Update.
8:43:12 AM EST - Eberon
Following the recent words from Harvey Smith (see news post below) about the Cassandra Project, the Narcissus entity has "spoken" again at the Cassandra Project's comms page. The post is very long, but quite informative. A new wallpaper is also included!

Game Critics: Ignorant
11:04:59 AM EST - BackDoorBandit
Blues News has a blurb on its site from a recent Wall Street Jounal article which focuses on kids and Mods. Just from reading the blurb, you can obviously see how ignorant so called 'game critics' really are. Mark Rein, from Epic, puts them in their place with one sentence. You've gotta love the guy. Without further adue, here's the blurb:

David Walsh, president of National Institute on Media and the Family, a nonpartisan organization that looks at the impact of entertainment on children, contends that underage mod makers are the moral equivalent of teenage pornographers. He thinks the game industry should apply the same rating system used on games to the mods themselves and restrict kids' access to Web sites where mods are posted.

The issue is starting to catch the attention of Congress. "This is a whole new problem," says Dan Gerstein, communications director for Sen. Joseph Lieberman, Democrat of Connecticut. Lieberman is the author of a bill that would authorize the Federal Trade Commission to penalize companies that intentionally market adult-rated entertainment directly to children. But the legislation is finely tailored to address deceptive marketing rather than prohibit kids from making mods for mature-rated games, Gerstein says.

Game companies say they are essentially powerless to regulate mods since they're usually written by people in their homes and posted on Web sites. (The companies' games, on the other hand, usually can't be downloaded from the Web but instead must be purchased from retailers.) Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games Inc., the Raleigh, N.C., developer of Unreal Tournament, says people are getting upset about mods when the problem is that parents let their kids have the games. "If you don't have the game, the mod is worthless to you," he says.

Indeed Mark, indeed. It's amazing how far a little common sense can go these days. If parents would pay closer attention to what their kids are doing, and regulating what they play, there's no reason for any restriction. Or...maybe congressmen are trying to force their views on other people. Has it ever occured to those congressmen that the parents don't care if their kids make, or have access to a Mod? I don't want the Congress telling me how to raise my children. Either way, it's a thin line to tread, but one that the United States Congress has no right to cross.

Cassandra Gains Praise
10:54:26 AM EST - BackDoorBandit
Recently I asked Harvey Smith, "Aside from Red Sun, which you've raved about, what Mod interests you the most, or seems the most promising." Checkout what he had to say:

The Cassandra Project is one of the most intriguing DX Mod projects going right now. their site is utterly cool. I hope to see their stuff shaping up soon. (or, as the Narcisistic Entity might say, 'Coalescence of core data has prime affinity.')

Well, it looks like Kieron and the rest of the gang's got a big head right about now. If you haven't heard of The Cassandra Project, you need to get your butt on over to their site and catch up on what you've been missing

Gamasutra Showcases Alex Brandon
9:46:27 AM EST - Dan
Alex Brandon is the musician behind many tunes in the Unreal Series and Deus Ex. Gamasutra has set up a page showcasing him and some select samples of his work; including some pieces from Deus Ex, and bits from private albums he has put together over the years.

Unless I am mistaken, and I may very well be, he also did music for the Crusader series, but I may be getting him mixed up with his cohort Necros, also of Straylight productions.

Alex Brandon will be doing the music for Thief 3 and Deus Ex 2.

Warzone APC!
4:43:38 PM EST - Eberon
My sincerest apologies to the team member that notified me of this -- I know it took a while to post.

Anyway, the Warzone mod has 3 new screens of the Piranhia III class APC that will be used to transport troops in the mod! Head to their site and see the latest newspost for details.

Modus Moriendi no more.
7:45:31 PM EST - Eberon
Sadly, Modus-Moriendi, one of the oldest modifaction projects in the community has closed its doors. The staff of DeusEx-Machina.com would like to offer their condolences to the team and best wishes in finding another hobby.

Blood Like Venom released!
7:41:11 PM EST - Eberon
The previously mentioned Blood Like Venom mod has been released and can be downloaded from the BLV download page. Be sure to give it a look and then stop by in our forums to discuss your impressions!

Deus Ex: 10th best game of all time - PCGamer
9:55:03 AM EST - Eberon
Fresh from my mailbox is the latest issue of PCGamer that contains the cover story "The 50 Best Games of All Time". Our beloved Deus Ex comes in at the #10 slot, which is a pretty great achievement given the fact that it was a totally new and fresh introduction into the gaming world.

The issue should be arriving in your mailbox today or within the next few days for those subscribers, and for those who check out the news stands, it should be another week or so before you start seeing it.

Coincidentally, I am almost 100% certain that every issue released since PCGamer reviewed Deus Ex has mentioned the game somewhere. This month's mention came in the departing Collin Williamson's Killing Box column, and last month's was inside the review for Anachronox

Shadow Textures in the Unreal Engine
6:47:51 PM EST - Dan
Big news for folks following the development of the Unreal Engine to be used in Thief 3 and Deus Ex 2. This time it's about something very important to both games ... shadows! Behold:
Another stunning effect is projective textures. Projective textures are used to create, among other things, soft-edge ultra-detailed real-time shadows that cast on the world as well as the objects and characters within it. In the example shown here there is a fan with mesh blades. The intricate shadows not only render over the characters and the environments but also over the particles as those particles are blown around by things flying through the air! DE has also implemented detailed character shadows that grow and shrink realistically as characters move around within the world and had UC up and running on Xbox before released the first Unreal Engine build with Xbox support.
While, granted, this is solely cosmetic, it's still rather nice looking. :) The entire post, as well as screenshots of the effect, is here. Furthermore, and something important to us:
[Epic Games was] so impressed with DE's particle system we implemented similar features in our own particle system which shipped to licensees ...
Meaning that this feature is indeed offered to Thief 3 and DX2. :)

System Shock: A Digital Vision, Part 1
6:37:30 PM EST - Dan
Maybe you heard it whispered vaguely, or blared bluntly. Either way, it's no secret that I am no fan of System Shock 2. It is, in my eyes, an unacceptable sequel to one of the best games ever. Rather then just pipe off about it, and eventually soil everyone's innocent pristine view of this flawed rock er ... gem coughs, I've done something a little more constructive! ;)

Today's Taffer's Post is the first part of a three part series, called System Shock: A Digital Vision. In it I revise the System Shock series into a trilogy, using ideas I have put together over the years. The first part of the series deals with System Shock 2, and the game it could have been.

So, those of you who I have not alienated yet (brace yourselves ;), stroll on over to the Taffer's Post and take a look! (You have been warned.)

Forum flavor, so you can post replies, is here.

Surround Sound Gets A Partner
2:20:38 PM EST - BackDoorBandit
Over on BluesNews yesterday, I noticed a nice topic about 'Surround Lighting' that Blues was reporting that PC.IGN was reporing on. Seeing as how the stealth aspects of both DX 2 and Thief 3 are going to be top notch, I couldn't help but dream about what Surround Lighting would do to the player. Talk about total immersion. I'm not sure if Warren and Co. will support this feature, but it sure would be awesome. Head on over to this article and read all about it.

A Late Review of DX
2:12:45 PM EST - BackDoorBandit
While this review is late, and a bit awkward as well, I spotted this over on BluesNews. Below is a piece of the interview.

I suppose it’s best to establish one fact before we go any further: Deus Ex is among the greatest games ever created. It is the first game which offers you freedom on two levels, and it does both better than anything else. Two levels of freedom? Yes, well I’m not really sure what it means either, but it’s the best way to sum up one of the most complex features in one of the most impressive programming feats of recent times. The first level is on the large scale - this is the freedom to make plot-related decisions at frequent intervals, and to alter the direction of the game. Do you obey your superiors or your conscience? Deus Ex constantly forces you into decisions of this magnitude, and then proceeds to rip apart your moral fibre, highlighting startling character flaws, not in your character, but in you. You.

To read the whole thing, if you feel so inclined to do so, hit up the The State's review of DX.

New Mod : Blood Like Venom
11:51:04 PM EST - Eberon
There's a new mod in town and its name is Blood Like Venom. A bit of information is taken from their story page..
The story starts you off in the year 2017. Technology is striving and many are coming up with devious plans which utilize the improved technology. Your goal: to eliminate the head of a secret underground military base that is being used as a nuclear launch site. Their goal: to elimate everyone on the face of the earth. You are hired by General Simmons. He sends you to infiltrate their base and cause havoc and in turn decipher the code to their nuclear bomb that is about to launch in 1 hour. The game player will have to go through many obstacles such as 3 boss fights, and several patrolling officers located in the military base. The main character remains nameless until you play the game, which will span several exciting levels as you try to achieve your goal. The title Blood Like Venom can be more understood when you reach the ladder (sic) part of the game.
Looks very interesting. As all projects, team members are undoubtedly needed, and there's a place for you to contact them about just that -- right here.

Evening news wrapup.
11:48:42 PM EST - Eberon
Here comes!

The Deus Ex : The Prequel project has word that their poll has now closed and London and The Denton Home have been chosen by the public to be sketched into the storyline and created. Not much else is new there, currently.

Target Sighted has two new team members, Silent Blade X and Darknight, who will both be mapping for the project. Additionally, the site has word that the first cut of the weapons code was completed by Dark and that there has been a small website tweaking to improve viewing and navigation.

Delusive's media section has been updated. Team members are still needed, specifically mappers, modelers, and 2D artists. Visit the recruitment page for details on helping out.

A bit of needed redundancy has appeared at the Universal Constructor, where DeX has written a Packges and Classes tutorial that shows up in other places. Additionally, the UCC building utility has been updated to be a bit more friendly and time-saving.

New Palmtree's mod.
11:36:42 PM EST - Eberon
There's a new(er) mod floating around called PalmTree's DeusEx mod. It contains the popular CTF as well as a Capture and Hold mode that will be familiar to any Tribes players. The project's website can be found here, where announcement of a new release is present. This brings the PalmTree mod to 1.4. Give it a try -- I hear El Kabong's server is or was running it a few days ago.

Warzone Wallpaper!
7:18:21 PM EST - Eberon
Raptor from Warzone just sent me word that he sat down for a few hours today and created a new wallpaper for us all. It's definitely going to be gracing my desktop for a while! Check out the Warzone site for the goods.

Biageo "Bee" Biondolillo
11:43:30 PM EST - Dan
As many of you who have been reading the Community Chat forum know, my Grandfather passed away Sunday morning. He and I were very close, we all were, and it's been a very difficult time for my family this past weekend and this week. His Obituary was published today in the Florida Today Newspaper, and I wanted to also publish it online here at TTLG.

I invite you all to read it here.

If any of you wish to send a message, please do so on this thread in the Comm Chat forum. I plan to print out and share this thread with my Grandmother next week after things have quieted down. It should make her smile to know that so many strangers all over the world have been thinking of us. Everyone's condolences and support has been deeply appreciated, and has helped me cope in this difficult time. Again, thank you.

Random news.
7:09:40 PM EST - Eberon
Rather than try to keep up with whatever has happened in the past week, I think that I am going to go ahead and start from today on. Other Deus Ex news sites will no doubt have word on all or most of the things that have gone on in the past week. However, there still are a few things of note:

Deus Ex : Big Brother has opened its doors. Not much is currently known about the project, but there is a bit of information at the website for public consumption.

Additionally, Penumbra has had a lot going on including a site redesign. Be sure to visit and see what's going on there!

News? What's news?
1:24:50 AM EST - Eberon
Well, as some of you have noticed, the pages of De-M have been rather empty lately. This was not accidental. I have decided to take a small break but I believe that news updates will resume this evening. Get pumped!

Max Payne in Thief 3 & DX 2?
5:36:07 PM EST - BackDoorBandit
Fatbabies is reporting that Eidos is telling their development studios to incorporate the Max Payne technology into there games. Here's the quote right from Fatbabies.

Eidos management has apparently gone to most of its development teams (both internal and external) and asked the teams to implement technology to mimic Max Payne features on many of its console games. This will cause delays to many of the projects, but Eidos execs believe the tradeoff (features vs. schedule) is a sound one. 3D Realms and Remedy should be proud of the game they have developed. It could have the same affect The Matrix movie had on the TV and movie industry--everyone was copying it to be "on the cutting edge." Is flattery the sincerest form of imitation? Or is it just plain laziness?

The key words in there are "console games". While some of you think this might not pertain to Thief 3 and DX 2, remember, they are being developed for the console market as well. I'm sure this could cause lots of debate in the TTLG community, but I'm sure ISA will make the right decision in how to incorporate, or not to incorporate said technology. Besides, who knows, maybe they thought about this beforehand.

Note** This is just a rumor going around. Nothing has been confirmed.

The Narcissus entity understands human feelings.
11:24:33 AM EST - Eberon
Wow, apparently the Narcissus entity has gained the ability to comprehend human emotion, which includes disappointment. "It" has found time during its important hyperbattles to send us this message:

The Cassandra Project have updated their site with several shots of two almost complete weapons models, including skins. You may find this information worth bringing to the attention of your readers.

All is well. We are not like the others.

Tron sighting.
1:03:38 PM EST - Eberon
Tron has been on the Encore channel a few times lately. What does this have to do with Deus Ex? Not much, but the password reindeer flotilla that was used in the PCRS Wall Cloud mission was a reference to this movie where the same password is used to hack into a computer.

Not only that, but Tron is a wonderful movie. If you get Encore, be sure to watch for it! It's a fantastic story that represents crude computer terminology in real-world dimensions.

New DXPS2 screens.
8:17:26 PM EST - Eberon
Even though many sites have received these, IE Magazine seems to be the one that got them up first. There are eight never-before-seen screenshots of the Playstation 2 Deus Ex screenshots that can be found here. Take a looksee -- they aren't too bad.

Evening mod news.
10:44:03 PM EST - Eberon
Only a couple of things going on, but some sites are being really good about regularly updating! Good for them.

Call it progress or a setback, but DX Insurgent has decided to scrap their first level design and use it for a DXMP map instead. We'll have to keep watching to see what becomes of this!

The X-strain has a short note that tells us that the project will be on hold for a number of weeks.

Delusive has a small update calling out for mappers. Visit their recruitment page for information on how you can help out. There's also a note there touting the supposed work of their excellent modeller. Let's see some screenies!

Deus Ex : The Prequel has been updating regularly and tells us the following things: the site has reached 1,000 hits; there will be a trailer made for the project; there won't be a trailer made for the project; and that there will be more site content next week.

Decide has an unskinned model of a UMP 45 that was done by spider. Be sure to visit the Decide website to see that model!

Yoinks -- Email troubles.
12:01:50 PM EST - Eberon
It seems that over the past week or so we've been having trouble with our email aliases. For the meantime, please use this address for all intents and purposes. We apologize for any inconvenience.

DXMP_CarPark released!
11:54:36 AM EST - Eberon
As mentioned yesterday, Face has been working on a new map lately. It's a simple, quick-and-dirty job, but it's complete and should offer some fun to fans of his style of mapping. You can download the map directly from this location. Give it a try!

Remember, you heard it here first at De-M!

Update: Due to a minor goof, an older, more unbalanced version of the map was put into the zip file. This was caught at about 6:30 EDT, so if you downloaded the map before then it's highly recommended (and will be necessary for online play) that you download it again. Face sends his apologies for the mistake and promises that he will buy you all pizza if it happens again.

Saturday, August 04, 2001

New map from Face tomorrow!
8:55:14 PM EST - Eberon
According to sources (yes, we actually do have sources here at De-M) close to the mapper Face, he has apparently been working secretly on a new MP map for the last couple of days that is being released sometime tomorrow. Be watching his site that will no doubt be updated with links and some infobits some time tomorrow.

Wow. Important news for all modification people.
12:45:24 AM EST - Eberon
This should be of great interest to all of you who are involved in Deus Ex Mods. The Ion Storm team wants to know all about your project. I'll allow Bill Money's words to speak for themselves:
Hello DX Mod Makers --

We are opening up a mail address just for you.

dxmods@ionstorm.com

Why are we doing this? We'd like to know about you. What your status is. Where your project is heading. AND - If you need any of our help. If we can give you that little push (or kick) to help you keep going, we want to be there for you.

When you send mail, please include the name of your mod, a brief summary, a timetable for completion, who the project's main contact is and about how many people are working on your team.

Thanks --

"The Perfect Assassin" needs team members.
12:42:01 AM EST - Eberon
An upstart mod, The Perfect Assassin needs team members. Not much is known about the team leader's intents, but offers of help and inquiries can be sent here (Thanks DXC).

Evening modification news.
12:40:23 AM EST - Eberon
Well, not much is going on as far as mod updates. Yesterday was a big day for that, but there's still some interesting things of note.

The Dune mod has updated with some site tweaks and a picture of their new rifle model on the media page.

Not exactly mod news, but news nonetheless... DeX from the Universal Constructor has finished part two of his Custom NPCS tutorial that can be found here.

Bloodbrada, a frequent contributor to Deus Ex Ed has a site of his own now that can be found here. Two new maps are available from that site, DXMP_East_LA and DXMP_Fight_Club.

Minor downtime.
10:38:55 PM EST - Eberon
Apologies to fans of the site: we had some downtime that was apparently not a problem with our servers but a problem with the connection our provider... provides. News updates and tons of other things come in a few hours!

Multiplayer expansion project set to outdo MP_Plus.
9:14:02 PM EST - Eberon
Another multiplayer enhancement project has been brought to my attention through the wonders of IRC. It's called Advanced Multiplayer and it, as of today, includes a massive 77 different characters that can be played. As always, check the readme file before messing about with it!

Update: In addition to "AMP", a weapons mod has also been released that adds 5 new fun, whacky, and interesting weapons. Believe me when I say that you will be laughing hard at at least one of them. Find the mods page here.

Goodies from the Cassandra Project.
8:14:18 PM EST - Eberon
The Cassandra Project has an update from the Narcissus entity that gives us unworthy humans something to scan :D It includes a profile of Miss Debbie, a fabulous Japanese car. Find the information on the Cassandra Project's comms page.

Files, DXMP, editing, and all that jazz.
7:41:05 PM EST - Eberon
Well, I really must apologize to slicer for dismissing his clan DEA site. I had assumed that with his departure he would also be resigning from webmaster and updating duties at the DEA clan site.

Of course I was wrong. News from the DEA site includes two new maps, Big Steel by El Kabong and Jail Break by OldGrandad. They can both be reached through the DEA files page.

Seems that DeX is back from his holiday break but is disappointed in the lack of tutorial requests! Got something that you've been itching to learn more about? Send your request to the above address. As for the now, there's a new tutorial on creating your own custom NPCS written by DeX.

Lastly for those of you who religiously follow us (hello out there!), you can be sure that we have a ton of things in the pipeline for you that will be showing up in the next two weeks. Stay tuned!

A few more updates.
7:32:00 PM EST - Eberon
DXMP Brothers has updated their site with information that Zenzelezz has been removed from the team due to inactivity. In other site news, Kamikaze has been working on a map called DXMP_Razor that will have a special soundtrack on loan from someone. The map's release is planned for this week -- just before Kamikaze takes his vacation. Check the Brothers site for current screenshots.

Thank goodness that nothing has happened to the Wrath of Halo, who hadn't updated in a while. The team wishes to direct your attention to their semi-new forum and their need for one or more modellers to join the team. Screenshots of levels should be coming soonish.

Warzone updates -- been about a month.
7:16:02 PM EST - Eberon
Well, it's been about a month since the last update from Warzone and it comes as no surprise that team members are needed. Animators are of particular importance, but coders, modellers, and other talents are always welcome.

As it is with every update at Warzone, there's a piece of visual information as well: a kevlar vest that will be in the final release. Go over there and take a gander.

Counterfeit -- NYC Streets Screenshots.
7:10:40 PM EST - Eberon
The Counterfeit team's latest addition, Kamikaze, has been hard at work and has produced some screenshots of his current map for your viewing pleasure. Be sure to get over there and savor the eye candy.

DX : Prequel Updates.
7:09:00 PM EST - Eberon
DX Prequel has posted a few updates over the past few days. Most of them boil down to one overriding concern: They want your input on map locations. Be sure to visit their forums and put in your vote/ideas for what you want to see.

Additionally, the staff of DeusEx-Machina.com would like to wish DocSkrilla a happy belated 19th birthday!

Evening modification news.
12:43:21 AM EST - Eberon
Here goes. Strap in and be sure to take some long reads at these sites. The time of project releases looms closer...

With the recent announcement that the Scorpion Mod being back in business comes regular updates again. As with all projects, team members are necessary. The recruitment page can be found here. Content for this update includes three screenshots of one of their potential maps, authored by biv. The staff also wishes to direct your attention to their forums.

TargetSighted has updated their features section with some information on the classes and augmentions that will appear in the project. There is also a temporary alternate site design for those who are having trouble seeing the current one.

Deus Fortress has an update with screenshots of a Canyon map that can be seen in the maps section. Two fully skinned models -- the sniper rifle and the marine's boomstick -- can be found in the weapons section, and some clarification has been made in terms of the models and weapons pages. Go see their goods!

Despite what Auriga's Designs and certain other sites may say, Deus Fortress is NOT in need of modellers at this time.

Sad news for DX Insurgent: B0rt, co-founder of the project has decided to throw in his hat due to creative differences. Some "good" news is that the foundations the project is based upon will be completely reconstructed which will hopefully result in a better life for all of us!

Redsun2020 has a new member who is none other than Steve Tack, creator and writer of Tack's Deus Ex Lab! This will no doubt be a wonderful benefit to the team.

DXMP PartyZone has an update that includes the news of Silver Dragon leaving the team as well as word that the PartyZone2 map has been updated with some awesome new features. Grab the map from here.

News flash!
12:06:53 AM EST - Eberon
There has been a news flash at PDX! Echelon is real! And a followup... my sources tell me that so is Paris, and, lo and behold, Hong Kong actually exists as well! Amazing! More on this as realization of the world develops...

News from a different planet...
12:04:45 AM EST - Eberon
Here's some new things afoot at PDX today...

There's a new hosted site at PDX called DX Mod Shop. They will be reviewing and previewing all of the different modification projects around. Sounds like a great resource! Welcome to the community, guys!

Also new at the Planet is a spotlight on Deus Ex Ed, the tutorial and resource site for Deus Ex editing. The decently-long interview with the webmaster of DX Ed can be found here.
